The area
Villa Airone is located in the Colostrai Special Protection Area, with almost 2000 hectares of large beaches and lagoons inhabited by pink flamingos, herons, and a rich and interesting resident and migratory birdlife.
The Colostrai pond (just behind the large sandy beach), covering about 110 hectares, can be easily walked along its banks or explored by mountain bike: herons, marsh harriers, Italian pond herons, little egrets, white storks, pink flamingos, and many other species make it an ideal spot for bird watching.
Also noteworthy is the aquatic fauna that supports the fishing activity: thanks to the direct access to the sea (made narrower and closed by some artificial barriers and the sand dunes that separate the lagoon), gilt-head breams, seabasses, and grey mullets can freely enter and exit the pond, effectively making these specimens "wild" and providing excellent quality to the catch.
The pond is immersed in the typical vegetation of wetlands: glassworts, sea daffodil, wigeons, reeds, and bulrushes further add color and charm to the surrounding environment.
The sunset over the lagoons is spectacular, with the thousand colors of the sun and the sky reflecting on the water.
The Colostrai beach is bordered to the north by a small rocky promontory on which stands the Salinas Tower: built in the seventeenth century, it served as a watchtower to counter the frequent raids of Saracen pirates.
Grocery shopping, bars, restaurants
The nearest market to Villa Airone is the camping market of Torre Salinas, about 1 km from the house: you can find essential items for basic shopping. Also at the Torre Salinas camping site, you will find a bar open from morning for breakfast to evening for aperitifs, and a restaurant/pizzeria where you can enjoy traditional Sardinian dishes and good pizza.
About 5 km away, in S. Priamo, you will find another small market with fresh bread, fruits and vegetables, cold cuts, cheeses, and traditional sweets. Also in S. Priamo, there are 2 bars: the Number One (great cappuccino and the house's citrus cake); and the bar/restaurant/pizzeria Su Crogallu where you can taste local typical dishes in a family-friendly and informal atmosphere.
The Muravera area has a strong agricultural vocation: along the roads around Colostrai, up to Muravera and Castiadas, several farmers sell their products directly, which are excellent and truly local.
Along the Colostrai beach (about 1 km from the house, in the area known as "Cristolaxedu"), you can rent beach umbrellas and sunbeds at the Nicla Beach Bar. At Nicla, you will also find a bar for breakfast and aperitifs on the beach, as well as cold dishes like sandwiches, caprese salads, and platters.
About 10 km from Villa Airone, Muravera, San Vito, and Villaputzu (very close to each other) are the main inhabited centers in the area. In these three towns, you will find supermarkets of major Italian chains (Conad, Crai, Eurospin, etc.) and several shops (butchers, fruit and vegetable shops, bakeries, pasta shops, fishmongers, typical products) where you can buy local products.
For fish, we recommend in Muravera the sale point of the S. Giovanni Fishermen's Cooperative, right in the town center, where you can buy local fish directly from the Sardinian seas and coastal lagoons managed directly by the cooperative.
Don't miss the traditional bread (made of durum wheat) baked in the wood oven: the traditional moddizzosu (or civraxiu), the coccoi (with a harder dough), the pistoccu (flat and crunchy), sa prazzida (a focaccia stuffed with vegetables) typical of San Vito.
